WeTransfer’s free plan now has a monthly limit of 10 transfers
File transfer service WeTransfer is now limiting users to 10 transfers per month with its free plan. The company is already applying the new limit to users, as per a support page.
At the same time, WeTransfer is adding some perks to the free plan, including increasing the overall file transfer limit from 2GB to 3GB, adding unlimited portals (collaborative folders to work with clients) and reviews, password protection for all transfers. It is also removing a 5% fee on paid transfer, a program that allowed users to sell files on the platform.
The company, which was acquired by Italy-based Bending Spoons in July, is changing its overall pricing structure, too. There is a new WeTransfer Starter plan that costs $6.99 per month. The starter plan has the same benefits as the free plan with an increased size limit of 300GB.
Previously, WeTransfer had a Pro and Premium plan costing $15 per month and $25 per month in the U.S. Now, the company is bundling all benefits in a $25 per month Ultimate plan.
At the time of acquisition, we wrote that Bending Spoons might lay off people from WeTransfer or change the pricing of the offering. Both of those are true now. In September, Bending Spoons announced cutting 75% of WeTransfer staff. And now, there is a change in pricing tiers, too.
The company followed the same playbook after acquiring Evernote in 2022. First, it slashed the employee count working at Evernote, and later, it restricted the note-taking app’s free plan. In August, the company also changed the way expiry dates on files work based on the plan that you are subscribed to.
